The Imamate, under Osman governorship since 1517, obtained its independence in 1918. On September 27, 1962, upon the death of Imam Ahmed, his son and successor, Mohammed el-Badr was deposed a few days after his accession by a coup d’etat of the army, and the republic was proclaimed. The Imam who had escaped, however, succeeded in rallying devoted tribal warriors and kept parts of the impassable hill country under his control.
