Group of islands in the Pacific with Savaii, Upolu, Manong and Apolima. Former German protectorate that came under New Zealand administration as a League of Nations mandate in 1919 and from 1946-1962 under UN trusteeship. Western Samoa has been an independent chiefs aristocracy since January 1, 1962.
