At the start of World War II, while in exile in China’s Kwangsi provinces, Vietnamese Communists organized the Revolution led by Ho Chi Minh, aimed at freeing Viet Nam of French rule. As the end of the War neared they ousted the Vichy French administration and declared Viet Nam independent. An agreement was signed at Geneva on July 21, 1954, dividing Viet Nam at the 17th parallel of latitude. The Republic of South Viet Nam was proclaimed on October 26, 1955. The second Indochina War came to a bried halt in 1973, while the United States withdrew its forces, but South Viet Nam unconditionally surrendered and Viet Nam was united as the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam on July 2, 1976.
