The Republic of Vanuatu, formerly New Hebrides Condominium, a group of islands located in the South Pacific 500 miles west of Fiji, were under the joint sovereignty of Great Britain and France. Vanuatu became an independent republic within the Commonwealth in July, 1980. A president is Head of State and the Prime Minister is Head of Government.
