Formerly the Uzbek S.S.R., the Republic of Uzbekistan is bordered on the north by Kazakhstan, to the east by Kirghizia and Tajikistan, on the south by Afghanistan and the west by Turkmenistan. Sovereignty was declared by the Uzbek Supreme Soviet on June 20, 1990, declaring itself independent in August 1991.
