The Tonga Islands (Friendly Islands) united as a kingdom in 1845, were under British protection since 1900. The first king of the united island realm was George Tupou I (1845-1893). On June 4, 1970 this Polynesian kingdom became independent.

Obverse Salote Tupou III, head right. Rev. coat of arms, value & origin. Large 39mm issue with a nice hint of gold/brandy over pleasant soft luster. Below average marks and strong natural eye appeal. Pretty uncirculated example for any set. (View image for more detail.)
