The Thai people originated from South China, pressed back the Khmer and founded the kingdom of Sukothai. After changeable battles, particularly with the Burmese, Chao Phraya Chakri in 1782 founded the Chakri Dynasty as King Rama 1 which has been governing until the present day. In place of the old state designation of Siam, the name of Thailand (Land of the Free People) has been used since 1939.
