From 1895 to 1942 Taiwan came under a governor general as a Japanese outlying possession. Since Taiwan had only temporarily been part of the Japanese state, the return of the country took place in 1945. The Kuomintang government under Chiang Kai-shek retreated to the island in 1949 before the troops of Mao Tse-tung. On March 1, 1950 the Chinese Nationalist Republic was proclaimed.
