The Anglo-Egyptian Condominium established over the Sudan on January 19, 1899 existed until its unilateral abrogation by Egypt on October 18, 1951. The present day Sudan Republic was declared independent on January 1, 1956 and on May 25, 1969 was declared a “Democratic Republic”. With introduction of the Sudanese Pound on April 8, 1957, the Egyptian Pound was superseded in circulation.
