Straits Settlements (Coins)

The British created this Crown Colony out of smaller territories previously acquired around 1800, the center of which was the city of Singapore. Penang and the town of Malacca were the only true components of the Straits Settlements on the Malayan peninsula, but the expansion in the direction of Siam by subordinating the Malayan princes under British rule or protection, extended the area of the Governor General far towards the North.

The Straits-Dollar was introduced on June 25, 1903 and was not only valid in the states of the Malayan peninsula, but also in British North Borneo, the Cocos Islands as well as on Christmas Island south of Java and in Sarawak.
