St. Helena was discovered by the Portuguese on May 21st, 1502 (the day of St. Helena), In 1588 the British were on the island, in 1633 the Dutch. The British East India Company was granted the Royal Charter in 1673 by the British King Charles II, permitting the company to occupy the island officially and to administer it. Since 1834 St. Helena has been a Crown Colony.
