The former protectorate of Italian Somaliland was united with Ethiopia in 1936 to form Italian East-Africa, and occupied by British troops in 1941. After the departure of the British troops, the territory came under United Nations trusteeship and was administered by Italy from 1950 until its independence on June 26, 1960. On July 1, 1960 British Somaliland united with the republic as Somalia. A democratic republic since October 21, 1969.

Tough FAO Coin issue to find. Obverse coat of arms with leopards supporting the shield. Rev. ox, sheep and goat, all of the Bovidae family. Plants: corn & genuine millet, bananas and grapefruits.
