The Slovak lands were united with the Czechs when the Czechoslovak State was founded on October 28, 1918 upon the dissolution of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire at the close of World War I. During World War II the Czech lands into the Third Reich as the “Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia”. The Soviet and United States forces liberated the area by May, 1945. After the overthrow Stalinist leader Antonin Novotn’y and his associates in 1968, the Communist Party introduced far reaching reforms which resulted in an occupation of Warsaw Pact forces resulting in the stationing of Soviet forces. The Communist Party lost its right to govern in November 1989 and a new Czech and Slovak Federal Republic was formed shortly thereafter. In the June 1992 elections the Slovak National Council adopted a declaration of sovereignty. On December 31, 1992 a constitution for an independent Slovakia came into effect, and two new republics came into being on January 1, 1992.
