The Rajah of Sarawak, Sir Charles Johnson Brooke, formally placed his principality under British protection in 1888. Due to the disastrous consequences of the Japanese occupation during World War II, the last rajah relinquished independence in favor of the colonial status in 1946. From May 17, 1946 until 1963 the country was a Crown Colony in Northwest Borneo. On August 31, 1963 Sarawak received self-government; thereupon it joined the Federation of Malaysia on September 16, 1963. Along with Sabah it constitutes the section of East Malaysia.
