An empire ruled by a Czar until February 1917 and then a bourgeois republic. After the October Revolution of 1917, the Russian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic (RSFSR) was created. On December 30, 1922 the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was founded which consisted of the RSFSR, the T(ranscaucasian)SFSR, the U(krainian)SSR and the W(white Russian)SSR. Later the Usbek, Turkmen (1924)) and Tadzhik SSR (1929) joined the Union. Further Union Republics were formed in 1940-1941 out of the Baltic states and the Moldavian territory as well Karelia, which after World War II lost the status of an autonomous republic.
