The principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia which originated in the 14th century, came under Turkish suzerainty at the beginning of the 15th century. In 1881 Rumania was raised to the status of a kingdom, after the two principalities had already had the opportunity of uniting in 1859, which then assumed the name of Rumania on January 24, 1862. Michael, the last king, had to abdicate in 1947; in 1948 the country became a People’s Republic. On December 17, 1989, there was an anti-Communist revolt in Timisoara. On December 22, 1989 the Communist government was overthrown. The new government established a republic, the constitutional name of which is Romania.
