Discover in 1521 by Magellan, this group of islands, situated in the Malayan archipelago, was a Spanish possession until 1898. That year it was ceded to the United States of America after the Peace of Paris. In 1916 the Philippines obtained limited self-government and, in 1935, were awarded dominion status with the designation of Commonwealth of the Philippines. The island nation became independent on July 4, 1946.
