The Republic of Peru, which is the third largest country in South America, lies in western South America along the Pacific Ocean. It is a nation which contains both a long narrow coast dry desert and, in contrast, the Andes Mountains, which rise east of the coast and extend north and south down the entire length of Peru. Famous for its glassy plateaus, Peru has an area of 496,225 square miles. Nearly one half of the 20,425,000 inhabitants are of Indian decent. Leading exports are fish meal, and minerals, coffee, cotton and sugar.
