Peru (Coins)

Before the conquest of the Spaniards under Francisco Pizarro (1531-1534) Peru was the central province of the Inka empire. The province created in 1542 comprised initially almost the whole of Spanish South America. During the early years of the battles of independence in South America, Peru was the focal point of Spanish demoination. The Republic of Peru was proclaimed on July 28, 1821, after the entry of General Jose de San Martin into Lima.

Obverse Sun, date (1879 over 1879), value & origin. Rev. “numeral 5” within circle, at edge; “MONEDA PROVISIONAL”, Centavos. Light trace of gray/gold tone from age over subdued luster but solid uncirculated example with minimal marks and natural eye appeal. Tough issue to find in this choice condition. Silver issue

Obverse coat of arms, date & origin (carries JF initials). Rev. allegory of the Liberty, inscription FIRME Y FELIZ FOR LA UNION, value. This 1.2500 g., .900 SILVER coin has wonderful bright gray color and extra fine features. Marks are below average. (View image for more detail.)

Obverse sunburst. Rev. value in wreath. Sharp for a zinc coin, although there are several darker areas present along edge, especially on reverse.. These issues usually turn very dark with toning. Wonderful example of this issue with just a hint of handling. (View image for more detail.)
