British crown colony 1840-1907, dominion 1907-1953, monarchist state in the British Commonwealth since 1953 with a parliamentary constitution. The Crown is represented by the Governor General. Administratively the Cook Islands, Niue and the Tokelau Islands also belong to New Zealand. In the Antarctic the Ross Dependency comes under the jurisdiction of New Zealand.
