Mexico became part of the Spanish colonial empire in the beginning of the 16th century. It obtained independence in 1821. In the 19th century Mexico lost over one-third of its old territory to the United States of America. The revolution that broke out in 1910 unleashed a civil war of many years duration, and led in 1917 to fundamental changes in the constitution and social reforms.
