Island in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, belonging to the group of the Mascarenes. Mauritius was discovered in the 16th century by the Portuguese navigator Mascarenhas, and became Dutch Territory in 1698. The island was named after Prince Mauritis of Orange. A British crown colony since 1810, Mauritius attained independence on March 12th, 1968.
