The former British Protectorate of Nyasaland was renamed Malawi. Between 1953 and 1963 the Central African Federation consisted of Northern Rhodesia, Southern Rhodesia and Nyasaland, but on July 6, 1964, Malawi became independent. On July 6, 1966 Malawi became a republic within the British Commonwealth.
