The world’s fourth largest island, off the southeast coast of Africa, in the Indian Ocean. In 1885 France succeeded in establishing a protectorate, and in 1896 Madagascar became a French Colony. After holding the status of an autonomous republic of the French Community, independence was declared on June 26, 1960. The Republic of Madagascar remained a member of the French Community: its name changed to Repoblika Malagasy.
