This small European country was connected to the Netherlands in a personal union until 1890. When the male line died out of the Dutch royal house, the House of Nassau took over the offices of state in accordance with the right of succession. The economic union as well as the currency agreement with Belgium was concluded in 1921. The duration of the agreement was initially for 50 years and in 1971 was extended.
