Having succeeded in uniting the Lithuanian tribes of the upper Memel and Duna, Grand Duke Gedimin created the large Lithuanian Empire during the 14th century. In 1386 Jagaila accepted as Jagiello the Polish royal dignity, thus creating a basis for unity throughout the empire. Following the dismemberment of Poland (1772, 1793, 1795), the entire Lithuanian territory fell to Russia. The independent Republic was proclaimed on November 2, 1918. The Soviet Republic was created on July 21, 1940. Western countries, including the United States, did not recognize Lithuania’s incorporation into the Soviet Union. Lithuania declared its independence March 11, 1990.
