After being under Turkish sovereignty, this North African country came to be governed by Italy in 1911. In 1934, after several military campaigns against the Senussi (1914-1932). Italy succeeded in uniting Cyrenaica and Tripolitania with Fezzan, thus creating the Colony of Libya. On October 7, 1951, the territory became an independent kingdom and on September 1, 1969 the Libyan Arab Republic.
