Liberty Nickels

LIBERTY HEAD TYPE 1883-1912

In 1883 the type nickel was changed to the familiar "Liberty Head." At first, these coins appeared without the word CENTS on the coin, but a large letter "V." Counterfeiters gold-plated these coins and passed them off as five-dollar coins. Later that year the word CENTS was added to discourage this practice.

Designer Charles E. Barber; weight 5 grams; composition: .750 copper, .250 nickel; diameter 21.2 mm; plain edge; mints: Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco.

1889 Liberty Head Nickel (Cu-Ni) - AG

Lots of wear both sides although obverse is stronger than reverse with clear date. Just a filler here, nothing more. Still, nice natural color and this tougher early date coin will fit adequately in a circulated set at a bargain price. (View image for more detail.)

1890 Liberty Head Nickel (Cu-Ni) - G

Very sharp detail for the good grade with nice “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and nice rims both sides. Lack of letters in “Liberty” keep this one at good but pretty natural brown and even wear are pluses. Nice example of this tougher early date. (View image for more detail.)

Lots of wear here, albeit somewhat even. Clear date and steel gray appearance. Coin is a filler for a circulated set only. Nevertheless, it is an early, harder to find date. (View image for more detail.)

1893 Liberty Head Nickel (Cu-Ni) - AG

Date sharp enough, but parts of legends are barely readable here, with Liberty worn smooth. A bit too much wear for good, so this one is an about good filler. Bargain coin for a circulated set. (View image for more detail.)

1894 Liberty Head Nickel (Cu-Ni) - AG

Borderline good detail here, with almost full rim both sides broken by heavier wear left side reverse. Light trace of cream/rose color present. Nice enough filler for most circulated sets. Semi-key date can get expensive in higher grades. (View image for more detail.)

1899 Liberty Head Nickel (Cu-Ni) - VG
