Located at the eastern end of the Mediterranean, Lebanon was part of the Turkish Empire. Constituting a French Mandate until 1924, Lebanon and Syria were governed separately between 1924 and 1941. In 1927 the French Confederation created the Republic of Lebanon. While independence was declared on November 26, 1941, the mandatory privileges were not transferred to the Lebanese government until 1944.
