IN 688 the various separate empires united by Silla, located in the South East. During the years between 1640 and 1885 Korea cut herself off from the remaining world, but soon China, Japan, and Russia gained a continuously growing interest in Korea. Finally, the territory became a Japanese Protectorate in 1905, but from 1910 to 1945 it held the position of Japanese Province.
