When the Belgian Congo declared its independence on June 30, 1960, the providence of Katanga detached itself from the Congo, and, under Moise Tshombe also became independent. A military intervention, supported by the United Nations, put a stop to this succession in January 1963. In 1972 the country was renamed Shaba.
