Designed by Felix Schlag, who won an award of $1,000 in competition with some 390 other artists. The Jefferson Nickel met high public approval for it's use of the portrait and pictorial theme.

Designer Felix Schlag; weight 5 grams; composition: 1938-1942-, .750 copper, .250 nickel; 1942-1945, .560 copper, .350 silver, .090 manganese; diameter 21.2 mm; plain edge; mints: Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco. Net weight 1942-1945: .05626 oz. pure silver.
