Up until the conquest by the Normans there were many Celtic kingdoms established on this island. Later Ireland came under British domination. On January 16, 1922, as a result of the of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, Southern Ireland became a free state with the status with the status of a dominion. When the Constitution came into force on December 29, 1937, the independent state of Eire was created.
