Once the center of the Sassanian Empire, this territory was conquered by the Mongolians in 1258. Ruled temporarily by Persia, it came under Turkish domination. In the years 1915-1917 the British Army of India conquered the Wilayets of Mesopotamia. On March 2, 1921 Iraq became a British mandate under the League of Nations, and in the same year Faisal I was made a King. Recently ruled by the dictator Sadaam Hussein, the country was liberated by a United States/British led coalition in 2003.
