The Act of Independence passed by the British Parliament in 1947 divided British India into an almost exclusively Mohammedan state (Pakistan) and a predominantly Hindu state (India). On August 15, 1947 India obtained the status of an independent dominion, and since January 26, 1950 it has been a republic within the British Commonwealth.

15 Rupees = 1 Mohur; since April 1, 1957: 100 Naye Paise =
