The original area of Essequibo & Demerary, which included present-day Suriname, French Guyana, and parts of Brazil and Venezuela was sighted by Columbus in 1498. Present day Guyana is the former British Crown Colony of British Guiana. The country is located in the northeastern part of South America and has considerable deposits of diamonds and aluminum. On June 26, 1966 the country became independent under the name of Guyana. but remained within the British Commonwealth. On February 23, 1970 the country became a republic.

1970 Guyana 1 Dollar (Cu-Ni) - BU

Obverse Cuffy, an African slave who organized a revolt on February 23, 1763 and captured from the Dutch governor a territory bordering the Berbice river. The Revolutionary Government, subsequently set up, was defeated after initial successes. The “Bernice Revolt” was the first step towards independence. Rev. motto FOOD FOR ALL above figure 1, with head of cow and ears of corn on either side. Pretty full luster and minimal marks on this uncirculated example. (View image for more detail.)
