The Maya tribes were suppressed in 1524 by the Spaniard Pedro de Alvaredo and their country absorbed into the Captaincy-General of Guatemala. After independence in 1821 Guatemala came temporarily under Mexican domination. In 1823 the country joined with the other states of Central America to form the Provincias Unidas del Centro de Americo. After the breakup of the Confederation and warlike conflicts, Guatemala became independent again in 1839.

Obverse National arms with long-tailed quetzal. Rev. quetzal on column, value. Pretty little toned coin with light blue, red, yellow over pleasant steel gray. Marks are below average and coin is a solid example of this .720 SILVER issue, .0386 oz. ASW. (View image for more detail.)
