The Greek War of Liberation between 1821-1830 brought to an end the Turkish domination which had existed since the 15th century. On gaining independence Greece became a kingdom, and in the years 1924-1935 was ruled as a republic. After the successful National Revolution of April 21, 1967, King Constantine left the country, which now has been a republic since 1973.
