The West African country of Ghana was formed by an Act of Independence on February 7, 1957. This act was passed by the British Parliament from the former British Crown Colony of the Gold Coast and the League of Nations mandate territory of Togoland (West Togo). Independence was proclaimed on March 6, 1957. Though a republic since July 1, 1960, Ghana is a member of the British Commonwealth and previously formed part of the British West Africa Currency Board.
