French Afars and Issas (Coins)

Area: 8,642 square miles                                           Population: 125,000 (1977)

On March 19, 1967, on the strength of a referendum, the name of French Somaliland was changed to French Territory of the Afars and Issas. The new name was derived from the locally predominant population of the Afars (Danakil) and the Issas. The former French Territory was renamed Dijibouti and became independent on June 27, 1977.
