The Third Republic came into existence after the fall of Emperor Napoleon III and lasted until 1940. After the Armistice of June 22, 1940, the Government was in the hands of Marshall Petain in Vichy, in the part of France which was not occupied by German troops. After the referendum of October 13, 1946 a new Constitution was formulated which established the Fourth Republic. The constitution of the Fifth Republic was granted by popular vote in 1958.

Since 1879, no mint marks appear on French coins with the exception of the B indicating a striking at Brussels in 1939, and during the years 1943-1958 as it refers to issues made by the mint at Beaumont le Roger in the Eure department. The mint mark C indicates special circumstances resulting from the two World Wars, when the mint at Castelsarrasin (Tarn et Garonne) issued coins in 1914 as well as in 1943-1946.
