A Christian empire in North Africa. Apart from the ruling Amharen people, among others living in the country are predominantly Mohammedan tribes of the Galla, Danakil and Somali. During the years 1936-1941 Ethiopia formed part of the Italian Empire. The emperor was deposed by a military committee in 1974. As of July 1976, Ethiopia’s present rule is by military provisional government which refers to the country as Socialist Ethiopia.
