Governed by a Turkish viceroy from 1867 until 1914 when it became a British Protectorate. In 1922 Egypt was recognized as a kingdom independent of Great Britain. In 1958 proclaimed a Republic. Called The United Arab Republic since 1958. This official description was maintained even after Syria had left the Union in 1961.
