On October 28, 1918 a republic was proclaimed in the states of Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia, which had previously been part of the joint kingdom of Austria-Hungary; the independent state of Czechoslovakia was founded. After the creation of the protectorates of Bohemia and Moravia (Cechy a Morava) on March 15, 1939, Slovakia obtained temporarily the status of an independent state started issuing its own currency. In May 1945 the Republic of Czechoslovakia was reestablished: in 1960 it was made a Socialist Republic.
