Cuba (Coins)

Cuba was discovered by Christopher Columbus on October 28, 1492 and taken as a possession of Spain in 1511, under the name of Fernandina. At the beginning of the 19th Century, when the Latin-American states obtained their independence, Cuba remained the most important colony of Spain. The United States occupied Cuba after the Spanish-American War in 1898, but gained independence in 1902 as a republic. Still, the U.S. dollar remained the currency until 1934. As a result of the revolution from 1956 to 1959, Dr. Fidel Castro became Prime Minister on February 13, 1959.
