Cook Islands (Coins)

Area: 90 square miles                                                                Population: 21,000

Discovered by James Cook in 1773 during his second voyage and named after him, the Cook Islands comprise the following 15 islands: Aitutaki, Atiu, Mangaia, Manuae, Manihiki, Mauke, Mitiaro, Nassau, Palmerston Atoll (Avarua), Penrhyn (Tongareva), Pukapuka, Rakahanga, Rarotonga, Suwarrow and Te Au O Tu *Hervey Islands). On September 16, 1965, the islands obtained complete internal autonomy as a dependency of New Zealand.
