The coral islands of Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, which are situated in the Caribbean Ocean, were under the administration of Jamaica until 1959. Then under a Governor General from 1959-1962 and since 1962 have enjoyed limited autonomy. Until the introduction of a local currency on May 1, 1972, the Jamaica Dollar was the legal tender.
