The Portuguese navigators, Diego Gomes and Antonio Nola, discovered this island group in 1460; until then it had been uninhabited and was settled with Negro slaves by Portugal. The colonial status was formally transferred in 1951 to that of an overseas province. Nevertheless, the movement for independence continued. After the declaration on independence of Guinea-Bissau (on the mainland) the Cape Verdes became independent on July 5, 1975.
