Cameroon was a German protectorate from July 14th, 1884, then enlarged by acquisitions of territories in the east and south of the country (New Cameroon) on November 4th, 1911. It was later occupied by the French and the British in the years 1914-1916. Then the French part was made a Trust Territory and the English portion joined with Nigeria. The reunification took place in 1961; the former French portion has been a republic since 1960. Like the countries of Gaboon, Congo-Brazzaville, Chad and the Central African Republic, Cameroon is part of the Monetary Union of Equatorial Africa.
