Once a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary form of government. After leaving the French Union, the country achieved full independence in 1955. The Khmer Republic proclaimed on October 8th, 1970 removed the reference to the myth of royalty from the existing coat of arms. On April 17th, 1975, the Khmer rouge took control of the government and renamed the country Democratic Cambodia.
